One-week shower boycott to begin March 22, 2014

AUSTIN—Well Aware, the Austin-based nonprofit that builds water systems for impoverished communities in Africa, has announced the return of its infamous Shower Strike— a global annual fundraiser that recruits volunteers to abstain from showering for one week or until they raise at least $1,000 toward life-saving clean water.

The sixth annual Shower Strike will launch on United Nations World Water Day, March 22, 2014. Teams and individuals who want participate can sign up online at www.showerstrike.org.

According to Sarah Evans, executive director of Well Aware, the Shower Strike is a ready-made way to give back that equates the first world of plentiful water for all things, to the life-and-death water situation in parts of Africa.

“For the people we are helping, a clean drink of water is a luxury. A shower is unheard of,” says Evans. “This simple, attention-grabbing fundraiser enables anyone who wants to help Well Aware’s cause—individuals, teams, organizations, student groups, companies, friends, and families alike— make a big impact in a short time.”

Every $15 raised provides sustainable, clean water to a person for 20 to 30 years. A team that raises $1,000 is giving the gift of water to 67 people.

Well Aware’s Shower Strike has raised more than $310,000 since the event first began in 2009, delivering lasting clean water to more than 20,000 people. The event has grown from 15 participants its first year to more than 70 active individuals and teams in 2013.

Well Aware will host a Shower Strike launch party at Chick Ranch Austin, 1102 E. Cesar Chavez St., on Friday, March 21 from 6- 9 p.m. The launch party is free and open to the public, and guests will have the opportunity to meet this year’s strikers, sign up as an individual or team for the Shower Strike, enjoy complimentary beverages and music, and help kick off the fundraiser with a bang.

Signing up for the Shower Strike is quick and easy, and Well Aware provides participants with all of the fundraising tools needed to ensure they are successful at raising their goal amount.

The top fundraising team and the top fundraising individual will be honored with their name on a sign permanently affixed to a 2014 Well Aware water project in Kenya.

All donations support Well Aware’s clean water systems and are 100 percent tax deductible. For more information about Well Aware’s Shower Strike, visit www.showerstrike.org.
