On the night of Tuesday, March 1st, Austinites came out to Kung Fu Saloon at 510 Rio Grande Ave to enjoy themselves while supporting a local nonprofit, Well Aware.
Well Aware is a 501(c)3 organization, headquartered out of Austin. The organization’s night at Kung Fu Saloon was well-deserved as every day, they work to provide innovative and sustainable solutions to water scarcity and contamination in Africa. They fund and personally implement life-saving systems to drive economic development and build self-sufficient communities in places like Ndabibi, Kenya.
20,000 people in Ndabibi were left in devastation when their water well broke beyond repair. Their schools, clinic, fish ponds and agriculture were all but abandoned without water. Well Aware met the Ndabibi community in 2013 and listened to stories about the struggles of childbirth and illness without a functioning clinic. Well Aware staff heard and saw the hopelessness in the parents’ eyes as they explained the low attendance at school, water-related illnesses and the deterioration of their previous development.
The following year, Well Aware returned to drill a new well for the community of Ndabibi. The existing infrastructure enabled the community to almost instantly began to prosper once again. There are virtually no reported illnesses from water in Ndabibi today.
15% of Kung Fu Saloon’s March 1, 2016 sales will be donated directly to Well Aware’s amazing efforts as part of the bar’s monthly Drink 4 a Cause initiative. If you missed out last night, visit Well Aware’s website to support them and find out more information.
