Like many communities in Nyanza, the village of Ratta experiences severe water shortage. Although there are some community boreholes, the amount of water is not sufficient to meet the community’s need. According to the Assistant Director of the Ministry of Water Kisumu county; water is a county disaster and all efforts are geared towards establishing reliable water sources - efforts yet to bear their desired fruits. A recurrence often repeated by “boda boda” operators whose livelihood depends on supplying water to homes far from water points. On a bad day like today, the water kiosk is dry and unmanned, empty jerrycans hungrily waiting for the return of water decorate the compound. Their carriers, neither amused by the absence of water which would loosely translate to no income for the day, so they hang around their motorcycles hoping that some water will flow their way.
