Atlassians are Walking for Water on a virtual 70 km route through Kenya to raise awareness of global water scarcity

Starting on World Water Day, more than 572 employees across Atlassian’s worldwide offices are walking 70 kilometers (43 miles) virtually through Kenya with Well Aware.

Because 1 in 7 people still lack access to clean water, and many walk an average of 3.5 miles to fetch water from faraway sources, Atlassians are uniting virtually to Walk for Water – putting themselves in the shoes of those burdened by water scarcity. This kicks off Atlassian’s participation in Well Aware’s annual Shower Strike campaign, helping raise awareness and funds for Well Aware’s sustainable clean water solutions.

Once signed up, employees have until Earth Day, April 22nd, to virtually walk the 70-kilometer route through 10 of Well Aware’s clean water projects in Machakos County, Kenya.

At every virtual checkpoint, participants will find water facts, learn more about the water project, and meet the individuals impacted.

One project featured is Kisueni Primary School, where 300+ students, like Brian, used to walk to collect water from ponds and dams up to 10 km away, but now have access to a lasting and reliable source of clean water.

Not only will employees learn more about the importance of water along the way, but, for each checkpoint they reach, Atlassian will donate $10 to Well Aware (up to $100 total per person), helping provide lasting clean water to more people.

Ultimately, Atlassian’s goal through this remarkable activation is to kick off the Shower Strike fundraiser and provide opportunities for their employees to take action against the global water crisis.

“We want to empower our employees to make a difference and support organizations like Well Aware that are working to provide access to clean water to communities in need.” – Mallory Burke, Social Impact Manager at Atlassian

Since Atlassian and Well Aware’s partnership began in 2019, Atlassian employees have provided skills-based volunteering for Well Aware, engaged in online events, participated in fundraising campaigns, and much more. In 2022 alone, over 60 employees contributed to Shower Strike, and hundreds more tuned in virtually across their global offices for informational Earth Day activations.

Through their efforts and support, Atlassian has already provided more than 2,600 people with lasting clean water – and counting. We can’t wait to see the difference this fantastic team will continue to make as they walk their virtual route across Kenya.
