Beneficiaries Review the Well Beyond App by Well Aware

Access to clean water is a life-changing gift, but ensuring that access lasts requires consistent care. The solution to the water crisis isn’t just building wells—it’s keeping them running.

The World Bank estimated that less than 5% of water projects are visited after construction, and less than 1% are monitored long-term (World Bank, 2011). With 50% of water projects in Africa inoperable at any given time, communities are forced to revert to unsafe water sources. For too long, water projects around the world have lacked the tools to thrive long after implementation.

That’s why Well Aware built something different: The Well Beyond App.

The Well Beyond App by Well Aware

The Well Beyond App is designed for community members to maintain and diagnose water systems, allowing them to prevent and solve issues on their own. It is multi-lingual, easily accessible offline once downloaded, and equips local community members with step-by-step troubleshooting guides, maintenance resources, and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) education. This means no waiting, no guessing, no costly delays. That’s the kind of sustainable impact we strive for.

Most organizations put up their infrastructure and never follow up. With this application, we can keep in touch with our beneficiaries for any future needs or requests.

True Sustainability

Sustainability means long-term solutions, but unfortunately, the word itself has become a buzzword. True sustainability in our work means involving our partner communities at every stage—from design to implementation to maintenance to expansion. By collecting valuable usage data, the app also helps Well Aware and our partners better understand how systems are performing over time, making each future project more efficient and effective. Sustainable water solutions require collective action, and the Well Beyond app connects communities and NGOs, bridging the problematic gap of accountability in the water sector.

Voices from the Field

Check out some past success stories to see how this app helps real people solve real problems.

Alamach, Kenya
Alamach, Kenya

An Alamach, Kenya community member reported that there was no longer water coming from the faucet of their Well Aware water project. With the app, we were able to remotely help them troubleshoot and repair the issue on their own. Instead of the ‘standard’ two weeks to resolve an issue of this type in East Africa, Alamach’s water system was back up and running in under two hours and at no expense to the community.

When COVID-19 hit, we quickly expanded the app to deploy critical information to rural communities to help protect themselves against the virus. Olmoran, Kenya was one of the first adopters. Remotely, we were able to provide sanitation & hygiene training to help prevent the spread of the virus. We also deployed water system maintenance tools to help the water committee prevent and resolve issues in real-time.

“A very resourceful package which is very easy to understand. The Olmoran community is very grateful.” – John

“The app has been of great help. We have been able to reach out to Well Aware with all the issues we are having with the equipment and air any changes we think will be beneficial to us, as well as any expansion we think of. Through the app, we were able to request additional storage in the school, and also when we were having problems with the pump. Thank you so much.” - Mrs. Makumbi, Tututha Primary school.

Kithoka, Kenya
Kithoka, Kenya

The community of Kithoka, Kenya was another early adopter of the app during the COVID-19 pandemic. We deployed sanitation and hygiene training, in addition to water system maintenance tools.

“The app has proven to be a great necessity in our community. The WASH tool is really great, especially the option of training a group; it is relatively simple to train quite a large group. And the Swahili version has made it easier for the message to reach everyone, despite their literacy level and economic background.” – Naomi

“The most beneficial part of the App is that we can request advice on how well we can maintain the infrastructure in real time” - Fredrick Mutisyi, Kitonyini Primary School

Today, more than 90 of our partner communities are using the Well Beyond App, ensuring our 100% success rate doesn’t go anywhere, because clean water is life.
