How to Participate

  • Option 1: Skip Showers

    WHAT
Once Shower Strike kicks off, you’ll commit to skipping showers for a week, or until you reach your fundraising goal — whichever comes first!

    WHY
In communities where clean water is not a reality, a shower is often a luxury. That’s why, for the past 13 years, thousands of advocates have been putting themselves in the shoes of those who lack this vital resource.

    SKIP SHOWERS

  • Option 2: Walk for Water

    WHAT
Grab a bucket of water, a gallon, a jerrycan, or a water bottle and walk outside each day for a week, or until you meet your fundraising goal.

    WHY
Individuals in East Africa without access to reliable clean water walk an average of 3.6 miles to fetch water, sometimes daily. They usually use jerrycans, which can weigh up to 40 pounds when full.

    WALK FOR WATER

  • Option 3: Just Fundraise

    WHAT
Raise money during Shower Strike the best way you know how. You can get creative and make up your own fundraising activities like a bike ride or bake sale. Or keep it simple and just collect donations.

    WHY
Your fundraising efforts will change lives, transform futures, and enable entire communities to thrive.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Shower Strike?

Shower Strike is a week-long annual awareness campaign where advocates from around the world pledge to raise funds for Well Aware’s clean water projects. There are a few ways to participate, but many people Skip Showers until they have reached their fundraising goal. While it’s called Shower Strike, the thought of not showering may not appeal to everyone, which is why some participants choose to Walk for Water instead or to simply just fundraise. We don’t care how you participate — all that matters is raising awareness of water challenges and helping bring clean, sustainable water to communities in East Africa!

Skipping showers isn't really my thing. How can I still be a part of this?

We have glorious alternatives!

Walk for Water. Put yourself in the shoes of those you are fundraising for and “Walk for Water ” daily during Shower Strike (April 19-25). Simply grab a bucket of water, a gallon, a jerrycan, or a water bottle — and head outside each day. You can walk around the block, walk to the nearest body of water, or even go for the full 3 miles, which is the average distance many women and girls have to walk to in order to get water for their families. Whatever you choose, this fundraising option helps you catch a glimpse of what it is like to have to “Walk for Water” daily.

Just Fundraise. Can’t skip showers, or walk for water, but still want to make an impact through clean water? You could shorten your showers, reduce your water usage, or whatever works for you. You could also use your unique skills or hobbies, such as cycling, baking, or whatever most calls to you. As long as you’re helping spread the word and having fun, we are just happy you’re participating!

Donate or Become a Sponsor! No contribution is too small and we are always grateful for those that are willing to give back. Every $15 raised provides one person with lasting clean water.

How do I get people to give me donations for participating?

By telling people that you are skipping showers or walking for water (or that you’re simply raising funds for a nonprofit you care about) you’ll have the opportunity to explain why water is so important! All you need to do is tell people what you’re doing (via social media, email, telephone, carrier pigeon, etc.) and invite them to contribute. It’s kind of like running a marathon, only it’s much easier on your knees.

We have an entire toolkit of resources for you to help you fundraise, including email templates, photos, impact stories, and more. Scroll down to access it!

Can I accept donations through Venmo or another payment processor?

Yes! Our Shower Strike website allows donors to give via Apple Pay, Google Pay, Venmo, PayPal, and more. But, the donation has to be made through your fundraising page to count automatically towards your goal!

Can I start a Facebook and/or Instagram fundraiser?

Yes! Once registered, you can create a Facebook fundraiser right from our platform by accessing your participant dashboard. Once set up correctly, every donation on Facebook will be reflected in your total on your Shower Strike fundraising page, and vice versa. We always recommend creating one because you will usually raise more if you do!

Instagram, however, is not yet integrated. Any funds you raise on Instagram you will have to manually report to our team to add to your page. You can email info@wellawareworld.org

Can I participate internationally? And accept other currencies?

Yes! Our platform enables you to set your fundraising goal in your desired currency. Your donors will also be able to choose which currency they would like to donate with.

Is it difficult to ask people for contributions?

Nope. Our Strikers consistently tell us that they are surprised by how easy it is. Here’s why: We make everything digital and simple. You’ll have your own Shower Strike fundraising page and everything can be done online. Many people want to help others have clean water, and you just became the way that they can. Go you!

Where can I find relevant and accurate information surrounding the water crisis?

Not to fear, we’ve done the work for you! Please check out our Water Facts page to find relevant information regarding global access to clean water. Pro tip: including some of these facts can be a powerful addition to your fundraising asks!

Looking for more info on Well Aware’s approach to clean water? You can read our blog or learn more about our 100% success model.

When should I start raising funds? Can I raise funds before the week of Shower Strike officially begins?

The week of Shower Strike 2023 is officially April 19-25, but you can start raising funds as soon as you’re ready! If you want to get ahead of things, you can get started today. We actually recommend it, because it will help you amplify your impact even further!

What do I do if someone gives me cash, check, or other direct offline method?

If someone wishes to donate with cash or checks, report those donations to us and we’ll add them to your donation total on your page. To report these donations, send an email to info@wellawareworld.org with the following information:

  • Donor name
  • Donor email and mailing address (if possible)
  • Donation amount
  • Method of payment (specify cash, check, or other)

Then, you can mail those contributions to Well Aware at the following address:

Well Aware

3571 Far West Blvd PMB 229

Austin, TX 78731

What happens with a sponsored donation match? Will it go towards offline donations, too?

If we are running a donation match by a generous sponsor, all online donations made directly to the Shower Strike website during that timeframe will automatically be matched!  That means your impact, and the impact of your donors, will be doubled, for a limited time.

However, donations made off of the Shower Strike platform will not be matched automatically. We reserve a small number of funds to match offline donations and our team will manually add them to your page. If you receive a gift from an offline method, such as Facebook, cash or check, you will have to notify our team ASAP before the matching funds run out. Email us at info@wellawareworld.org for any questions or help here.
