Daaba Centre: When Clean Water Stays
In 2011, when Well Aware first partnered with the community of Daaba in Kenya, access to water was uncertain. Previously, another organization had implemented a borehole well that had broken and been left. Families went from having clean water back to the harsh reality of life without water – again.
In partnership with Spectrum Brands (GloFish), Well Aware rehabilitated the existing borehole, restoring reliable access to clean water for thousands of people. As the community grew, the team expanded the water system three additional times – in 2015, 2017, and again in 2021 to continue meeting the needs of local families.
Today, the system serves approximately 9,000 people, and the story of Daaba has proven that the Ripple Effect of clean water changes everything.
Over the years, the community has continued to invest in its future, creating opportunities that reach far beyond the water point itself. This summer, community leaders shared exciting updates that reflect just how much Daaba has grown.
A new early childhood education program is helping young learners get a strong start. Four new classrooms have been built, creating more space for students to learn and thrive.
Enrollment continues to rise, with the secondary school growing from 400 students to 750 students in recent years.
Education has become a cornerstone of the community’s progress. Since 2010, Daaba’s scholarship program has awarded more than 600 scholarships, helping students continue their education and pursue opportunities that were once out of reach.
The community has also expanded opportunities for adults. A new tailoring school now serves 25 women, providing vocational training and income-generating skills. A new carpentry school is equipping community members with practical trades that can support families and strengthen the local economy.
Beyond education and workforce development, Daaba has invested in spaces that bring people together. A new community center has become a gathering place for meetings, programs, and connection. New greenhouses are supporting agricultural initiatives that help families improve food security and build resilience.
These accomplishments belong to the people of Daaba. Their vision, leadership, and commitment to creating a stronger future continue to drive the community forward.
At Well Aware, we often emphasize that clean water becomes a long-term anchor for community prosperity. Daaba is a powerful example of what that looks like in practice. Reliable access to water creates the conditions for healthier families, stronger schools, economic opportunity, community-led growth, and so much more.
More than a decade after the original rehabilitation project was completed, the impact continues to expand. What began as the restoration of a broken water system has become a story of transformation, resilience, and possibility. And Daaba is still just getting started.
