Honoring a Life Lost Too Soon

On July 28th, Greg Godkin is climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise $65,000 for Well Aware—enough to fund a clean water system for a community in East Africa. But now, his climb means something even deeper.
A little girl, the daughter of two longtime members of the Well Aware family, recently lost her life in the devastating Texas floods. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, her name will not currently be revealed. She was a natural leader. She loved animals and all living things. She made everyone feel welcome, always had a smile on her face, and brought joy wherever she went.
Greg, a father himself, couldn’t stop thinking about the children whose lives were taken too soon. So he’s dedicating his climb and this new water project to her memory.
Greg’s climb isn’t just about reaching the summit; it’s about creating something beautiful in her name. Through this fundraiser, we have the chance to honor a young girl who truly made the world better while she was here.
Your gift will help us reach our $65,000 goal and carry forward the spirit of a child who was radiant, inclusive, and endlessly kind.
There are no words for a loss like this. But together, we can create something meaningful. We can show her family that her light is still shining—just in a different part of the world.
“Her life, and the love her family continues to pour into the world, deserves a legacy that lifts others up. I hope this effort brings some light in the midst of their grief.” - Greg Godkin
Well Aware is a 501(c)3 nonprofit with headquarters in Austin, Texas. They fund and implement lasting clean water systems to drive development and empower communities in East Africa.
Well Aware believes their responsibility to their partner communities goes far beyond the drilling of a hole. Nearly 50% of water projects in Africa fail, often within the first year. 100% of Well Aware’s water systems work and they last because of realistic, responsible planning and collaboration. Their partner communities are motivated, organized, and prepared communities who need only sustainable clean water to kick-start their success. That’s why Well Aware adapts each project according to the community’s specific needs and collaborates with local leaders to ensure the water system’s long-term success.
After a year of intense training—and even a broken foot just months ago—Greg is finally setting out to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. His determination, grit, and heart are unmatched. But this isn’t just a personal goal, it’s a mission.
As he climbs one of the tallest mountains in the world, Greg is also raising funds for Well Aware, supporting sustainable clean water projects in the very region he’s trekking through. Every step he takes is for the communities in East Africa who climb their own daily mountains just to access safe water.
Help Greg turn this incredible journey into lasting impact. Donate today and be part of the reason more people can drink clean, life-saving water.
“I’m grateful for your support. It is an honor to be able to give back to the local community where my week-long hike will occur and do all of this in honor of a young life lost too soon.” – Greg Godkin
