Press Release: Clean Water Nonprofit, Well Aware, Grows with New Executive Director

Kareece Sacco will add executive leadership to scale Well Aware mission with help of for-profit partner.

AUSTIN, TX — The board of directors for Well Aware, the Austin-based nonprofit building sustainable clean water systems in East Africa, has unanimously voted to promote Kareece Sacco, currently serving as DOO, to the role of Executive Director in order to scale the organization’s mission alongside its for-profit counterpart, Well Beyond.

With additional executive leadership, Well Aware will be able to expand its capacity to build sustainable water wells. Since 2010, Well Aware has partnered with more than 70 communities in Kenya and Tanzania to provide sustainable clean water for more than 300,000 people with an unprecedented 100 percent success rate. The organization’s technical expertise is now offered as a service to outside organizations by the social enterprise, Well Beyond, to further the nonprofit’s mission and create an additional revenue stream.

The founder and CEO for both Well Aware and Well Beyond, Sarah Evans, will continue to act as Well Aware’s visionary, spokesperson and work closely with Sacco to drive the mission of the nonprofit in partnership with Well Beyond. Evans commented, “I knew we needed to scale beyond our current funding model to meet the incredible potential of our team and projects model. We’ve found an innovative solution through Well Beyond, and this new path means that Well Aware needs additional executive leadership. Kareece was my first choice. When I considered the needs of this role, the most important being integrity, intelligence and a passion for this work, I knew it should be her. I am so excited to work with her on scaling Well Aware’s mission, and I have high expectations that I anticipate she will exceed.”

Sacco’s role is a testament to the nonprofit’s existing growth in scale and impact. She accepted the position saying, “I feel deeply honored to have been chosen to help lead this incredible organization. Since being involved with Well Aware for the past five years, I have watched it grow in scale in impact, and it’s been my honorto grow with it. Working alongside and learning from Sarah over the years has been an immeasurable privilege as an emerging leader. Watching her put her all into this mission has been beyond inspiring to witness, and her mentorship during this period of transition will be something I will continue to lean on and learn from as I grow in this new role. This is a very important time for Well Aware, and I am ready to help drive further success to deliver more clean water to more people in a way that’s never been done before.”

According to the World Health Organization, 750 million people around the world—more than twice the population of the United States—lack access to safe water. Women are children spend an estimated 140 million hours every day collecting water, resulting in $24 billion in lost economic value when they are not able to participate in income generating work or attend school. In addition to the economic impact, water-related disease is responsible for the death of a child every minute.
